US Pledges $15m To Help Pakistan Fight COVID-19 As A Priority Country

According to US embassy officials, Pakistan and the United States have been allies from the beginning, at a time when the world is facing the Corona virus epidemic, the two countries have once again emerged as frontline partners. The United States has been ready to help Pakistan whenever needed in the past. Now that both countries are facing Corona, the United States is once again providing assistance to Pakistan to deal with the epidemic. According to US officials, the long-standing partnership between Pakistan and the United States in the health sector began with the training of health care workers and the provision of much needed labs and emergency supplies with $2 million funding. Recently, in the second phase, the United States has increased its cooperation in these important priority issues that were identified by the Pakistani authorities, in this regard, the United States will provide $15m million in aid to Pakistan.

The aid also includes three new mobile labs aimed at assisting Pakistani authorities in the process of testing, treating and monitoring the Corona hot Spots area. The United States will also fund high-tech emergency operations centers in Islamabad, Sindh, Punjab, KPK and Balochistan to monitor Corona, as well as train community health workers to provide home-based assistance to citizens to reduce the burden on hospitals.

US officials say the United States has provided $2.4 million for new life-saving activities for Afghan refugees and host communities in Pakistan under the auspices of the UN refugee agency. In addition, the United States is a major supporter of debt relief and extraordinary initiatives by the G20 countries, which will provide significant relief to Pakistan.

Last month, US President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan promoted health partnerships in both countries and discussed ways to tackle the corona virus in a coordinated manner and reduce its impact on the economy.

A statement from the US Embassy said that the United States is providing $5 million in new assistance to support Pakistan's Ehsas Emergency Cash program. The United States has provided 336 metric tons of food and equipment to 50 health centers for malnourished Pakistani children. In recent aid, the United States has announced about ً$15 million in aid to Pakistan to deal with the corona virus and its economic effects.
